Kate is a wild Mule Deer that I have developed a friendship with for seven years now. You can see her intelligence in her eyes. She is working things out. Deer are often thought of as just trophy game, but if you take the time to develop a relationship with them, you will see that they are just as smart as a German Shepherd, and have vast knowledge of the natural world that we will never know. They are also patient and will wait for me for hours. They are gentle at times, and other times they can be strong, forceful and fierce. They are also curious, and want to test things out. They are loyal, sweet and actually desire companionship. I have even observed Mom's babysitting fawns for sister Does. They are very family oriented. They key to my relationship with Miss Kate is that I never push her beyond what she is comfortable with. If she lets me pet her, great! If she pulls away, that is okay, too. We have a mutual respect for each other.
Life has taken me all across the United States and influenced my artwork both culturally and regionally from coast to coast. Growing up in the lush, pristine woods of Michigan, I was initially inspired by nature; but as I grew up and moved from place to place my artwork style and subject matter has changed and grown with me. I studied fine art, graphic design, photography and journalism at Grace College, in Winona Lake, IN, graduating in 1992 with a B.A in Graphic Design. As the wife of a Marine Helicopter Pilot and a mother of two boys, I have lived a rich life of adventure, self discovery and spiritual introspection that is reflected in much of my artwork.
