Description
I was inspired to paint a raven at sunset after a trip to New England. While in New England I visited Salem, MA, Boston, Maine, and Concord, MA. I was inspired by all the authors to come out of that area. I thought often while there of the American Gothic authors such as Hawthorne, Poe, Thoreau, Longfellow, Alcott and Emerson; and I visited many of their homes. Something about a dark tree against a twilight sky captures the feeling of Salem as a storm was coming in while I was touring The House of Seven Gables, and the raven reminded me of Poe. The Raven evokes magic, mystery, forbidden practices, witches, and all things Halloween; but Ravens have also traditionally been associated as messengers of Heaven, as in when two Ravens fed the Prophet Elijah. As the largest of the Corvid bird family, they are extremely intelligent and expert flyers.
